Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a whole school approach to design and implement strategies, practices, and interventions for promoting positive social-emotional and academic skills.
PBIS is an evidence-informed approach framed within a continuum of supports and services. Our school focuses student support and services in tiers, each tier becoming increasingly individualized to the student. School staff recognize that when strong and effective universal supports are in place, they will support the large majority of the students and fewer will require targeted or intensive individualized support. Students’ mental health and wellbeing, behavior, and learning are all connected. A change in one may result in a change in others.
Developing a shared understanding of the key elements of PBIS, provides an opportunity for school staff to collaborate and collectively address concerns related to student behavior and ensure a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and nurtures a sense of belonging and a positive sense of self.
